By distributing the ledger you remove a central point of failure from the network. If a security risk arises in one place you still have 99% of the network keeping everything safe.

1- By permitting everyone in the network to be able to verify any transactions, and bringing transparency since if a network is centralized any change on it would be made by a restricted person or Organization.
2- Because all the data would be on the power of the central authority, or and they could do whatever they want with it, any attacks on the central could result in the lost of the entire information on it.

    Decentralized network increase security by handling data in to a globally distributed data base instead of a central one. In doing so it alleviates the problem of, single point of attack or putting un necessary(too much) trust on one entity.

    The very nature of some of humanity always has always been tied up with greed and corruption and history has thought us what happens when we put our full trust on single entity- be it private or governmental. Be safe using blockchain than sorry.

We see this in media quite often where a major news outlet asserts that something is true but later turns out to be untrue.

By a) granting several copies of the up to date ledger are available;
b) the more decentralised, the harder it is for an attack on the ledger to be economically viable

Because the central authority may fail in keeping the data protected, and moreover because a central authority can be corrupt, politically misused, has the power to alter data, power to deny access, and abuse its users by any creative means
