Monero Announcement - Reading Assignment

  1. XMR Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency was published
    April 25, 2014, 12:38:50 AM. It has been read 4 609 538 times.

  2. There are 7 core team members.

  3. The stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP based approaches are Ring signatures and one-time use keys.

  4. The stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches are XMR provides decentralized and trustless mixing. They do not trust operators or master nodes. Monero’s ring signatures mix outputs, not transactions, so you do not have to coordinate with other senders in time or amount. This creates a greater/larger anonymity set and makes the tx’s quicker and more effecient. It also renders timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

  2. 6 or more. Not sure whether “othe” is a nickname or a typo.
  3. Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature than ZKP-based approaches, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade.
  4. XMR uses newer cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality over CoinJoin.XMR’s ring signatures are also far more secure and convenient than CoinJoin because they mix outputs not transactions. This means a transaction doesn’t involve waiting around for other senders to mix with. Nor is a user restricted to mixing only if others are sending the same amount. Arbitrary amounts can be sent at any time without anyone else’s participation. This feature makes a timing analysis of the blockchain useless.

3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?

  • Ring signatures have been around since 2001 and have had time to mature, are simpler, and have had many peer-reviewed papers over the years. On the other hand, with ZKP technology being fairly new at the time, it hasn’t had the chance to be fully tried and tested for exploits.

  • With ZKP, there is an element of trust needed that the RSA private keys are destroyed by the generating party.

  • ZKP also hides the entire economy, so that the actual quantity of coins cannot be verified, leading to issues with double spending, which could devalue the entire ecosystem since it creates a shift in supply and demand.

4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

  • Decentralized and trustless mixing.

  • More convenient and secure since XMR’s ring sigs mix outputs, not transactions; ie. no waiting around for other users to mix with & users are not restricted to mixing the same denominations.

  • The above also makes timing analysis of the blockchain useless, giving XMR another advantage.

Ring signatures and one time keys.

  1. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

It doesn’t need to trust operators or masternodes. Monero´s ring signatures mix outputs and not transactions.

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
Monero utilizes ring signatures as part of the dual layers of privacy provided by one-time keys and ring signatures. ZK provides anonymity for everyone in the network, but ring signatures are much simpler and more mature. - being tested for a much longer time.

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
The decentralized and trustless mixing of the outputs and not the actual transactions.

Edit #2 I just read a thread on Bitcoin Talk and fluffypony says there are 7 core developers.

1: April 25, 2014 read 4625733
2:7 core team members
3: Using Ring signatures and one time keys expand the anonymity set
4: Mixing of outputs and not TRX . No waiting for similar amounts no need to wait for other users to join the mix.

  1. 25 April 2014, could not see were it says how many times read.?
  2. 7
  3. Ring signatures and one-time keys.
  4. XMR is trustless and needs no intermediaries and is more secure by mixing outputs not transactions.
  1. It was launched on April 18, 2014 (preannounced and no premine/ICO/etc.). Thread has been read 4,625,836 times

  2. There were 7 core developers, with mostly cool nicknames, although I bet fluffy pony and noodle doodle have taken some heat over the years.

  3. Benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP based approaches are the founding in well known and tested cryptography methods and the lack of need to trust a third party (which might be hacked or operate maliciously).

  4. Another benefit is that it mixes outputs not transactions. i.e your 1 unit output is mixed with and becomes indistinguishable from lots of other 1 unit outputs. Your total transaction is made up various unit amounts that combine to the total. Mixing is not reliant on some other random person wanting to send a transaction that is the same size as yours. There are no nodes that have to be trusted.

How many ‘core team’ members are there?

There were 7 core members.

What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?

“Ring signatures are much simpler and more mature, with many peer-reviewed papers published over more than a decade.” where as ZK “The largest risk is that this is recent research-level cryptography that hasn’t been subjected to years of crypt-analysis, so exploits may emerge down the road” Ring signatures have a’lot more history and scrutiny over Zero-knowledge which is still new and the kinks haven’t been fully worked out or explored.

What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

The benefits are that its decentralized unlike Samourai and trustless unlike coinjoin operators like Wasabi. Also Ring signatures mix outputs and not transactions, you don’t know where the money ends up. And the mixing is automatic, no extra effort is required by the user. too add, the user doesn’t have to wait around for other users to mix with.

With ZKP the RSA private key used to initiate the accumulator must be trusted to be destroyed by the generating party.

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
to use new cryptography (outside the Bitcoin Protocol) to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality.

WHat is stated is ring signatures and one time keys

  1. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?

they are similar, but the difference arise in the departure from the bitcoin protocol, which allows xmr to use new cryptography to provide decentralized and trustless mixing of superior quality.

The benefits of ZeroCoin and the ZXP approach is it’s ring signatures are one time keys.
Benefits over the CoinJoin based approaches are that the ring signatures are more secure because they mix the outputs not the transactions themselves, making it faster and more efficient.

  3. Due to research level of cryptanalysis exploits might emerge down the road and requires a RSA private key to initiate the accumulator which may or may not have been destroyed by the generating party.
  4. Provides decentralized mixing and does not require a central server. They also mix outputs, not transactions which means you don’t have to coordinate with other parties in the network.

So far it has been read 4626155 times and was published on 25 April 2014

  2. How many ‘core team’ members are there?
There are 6 main team members

  3. What are the stated benefits over ZeroCoin and ZKP-based approaches?
The stated benefits are that the principles behind ring signatures and one time use keys are tried and tested, peer reviewed methods that are far more mature. If the Zero Knowledge system is compromised, then no one would know. Monero aims for a balance between anonymity set and block chain security.

  4. What are the stated benefits over CoinJoin-based approaches?
Monero’s approach to mixing uses a higher level of cryptography which is more secure in terms of privacy and mixes outputs instead of transactions, this means no waiting for people who want to spend the same amount as you before you can begin a mixing process. Also, the system doesn’t require a third party (such as Masternodes) to initiate the mixing process between different users and is therefore more decentralised and trustless.
