A tile is a graphic(usually square in shape) used in 2D video tile based games.
Tile based games are games that uses tiles as one of the fundamental elements of play.

  1. In a video game the screen (which the user sees and interacts with) is layouted in a grid. The grid itself consists of different small square graphic images (or some other kind of style of the graphic e. g. parallelogram). These small graphic images are called tile

  2. The whole screen with all of the tiles is called the tileset.

  3. They are not a game genre. Tile-based means in this context the visual representation which the game engines uses as its technology.
